Low-key Makar Sankranti celebration in Tripura, CM takes holy dip at Tirthamukh

Agartala, Jan 14: Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb joined hundreds of devotees taking a holy dip at Tirthamukh in Gomati district to mark the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti.

Deb went to Tirthamukh on Thursday night to attend the traditional Pous Sankranti Utsav; he took the holy dip and prayed for well-being of the people.

As per the Covid protocols, large gathering has been restricted at Tirthamukh Mela this year.

Later in a Facebook post, the Chief Minister appealed to all the devotees visiting Tirthamukh to maintain Covid appropriate behaviour and follow the guidelines.

Earlier, Tribal Welfare Minister Mevar Kumar Jamatia and MP Rebati Tripura took part in the inaugural ceremony of Tirthamukh Mela.

The Makar Sankranti is being celebrated across Tripura this year in a very subdued manner following the Covid restrictions imposed by the government.

On the occasion of Makar Sankranti this year, religious rituals are only taking place in some selected places including Tirthamukh, where the devotees gather every year to offer Tarpan to their ancestors and perform Ganga Puja.

Meanwhile, despite the lack of festive spirit, the village women are drawing traditional Alpana and making Pitha while the children took part in picnic by making ‘Burir Ghar’ in many places.
