Assam Police Foils Large-scale Cannabis Smuggling Operation; Seizes 637 kg of Contraband.

In a significant development on Saturday morning, Assam Police intercepted a container vehicle with registration number NL02Q-8170 at the Churaibari Watch Post in Karimganj district. The vehicle, en route from Agartala to Guwahati, triggered suspicion as it crossed the Tripura border. Upon attempting to conduct a search, the driver absconded, heightening the police's concerns.

Prompted by the driver's escape, authorities swiftly proceeded to inspect the vehicle. The search uncovered a staggering 637 kilograms of dry cannabis concealed in 91 discreet packets within the top-secret cabin of the car. According to Assam Police estimates, the black market value of the seized contraband is approximately 64 lakh rupees.

The police suspect that the cannabis was intended for transportation from Tripura to Guwahati, with potential further smuggling routes beyond. The Assam Police has initiated legal proceedings under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and is actively investigating the incident to trace the origins and intended destination of the illicit cargo.

This interception underscores the escalating challenges posed by the illicit cannabis trade, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance and collaborative efforts among law enforcement agencies to curb the proliferation of such illegal activities. The successful operation by Assam Police serves as a deterrent against the unlawful trafficking of narcotics and reinforces the commitment to maintaining public safety and order in the region.
